Safety Nets

While it is important to have back up plans; safety nets might not be a good idea.

A back up plan is concrete. You lay out steps to follow in case of an event that will lead to some sort of result. Safety nets provide a false comfort – they are theoretical. If you hold off on doing something because you want a safety net to fall back on, you’ll never do it.

The thing with safety nets is that we set the parameters for them. We constantly doubt if they are sufficient enough. A safety net is a fabrication to keep us feeling comfortable in an otherwise uncomfortable situation or place; therefore, to keep ourselves reassured we continue to broaden our criteria for said net.

Instead, create a back up plan – a list of steps to follow that will lead to concrete results. Back up plans might seem scarier because they might fail, but at least you can adjust and learn as you go.

Maybe it’s time to stop making excuses, and start taking action.
