Breaking Impossible

Roger Bannister was the first person to run a mile in under four minutes. He trained for years to do it; obsessed with the idea of running a mile in such a short period of time. The world around him telling him it was impossible.

He trained and persevered every day, ignoring the naysayers who told him it was hopeless. Every year his time got closer to that four minute mark, but it never mattered how close he got, everyone said he would never do it – that no one could.

Then on May 6, 1954, Roger Bannister did the impossible- he ran a mile in 3:59.4 and the world erupted. Roger Bannister finally broke the idea of “impossible” to athletes and people all around the world.

It took years for him to achieve that goal, but once people found out it could be done the record was broken in just 46 days. Now over 1,400 athletes have run a mile in under four minutes and it has become the standard for male professional middle distance runners.

All it took was one person – one moment – for people to see that the impossible was possible. So when you’re working towards your goals and you think it’s impossible to beat them, just remember it’s not.

You’re in a constant race against yourself and your competition, so don’t settle for good enough. Aim for breaking impossible.
