How many times have you found yourself thinking about trying something new only to than find excuses to delay the experience?
You’re curious to try a new style of pizza, but you never seem to be in the “mood” for it.
You want to give working out a real chance, but you never have the time.
You’ve been thinking about trying a new sport or activity, but you just can’t seem to find the right people to play with or the time to do it.
We hold off and create these excuses because our lizard brain is firing off signals. It doesn’t want to experience these new things because they aren’t what we’re used to. In a way, we’re running away from change.
Now think about those times where you finally got around to doing one of the those things. Did you end up having a positive experience? Is the thing you were once unable to try all of a sudden something you’re doing all the time?
Myself for example; I’ve been saying I want to play Dungeons and Dragons for years. No matter who offered to play with me or help me set up a campaign, I never actually played. There was always an excuse for me to miss the games or to outright try to avoid it. Why? Honestly, it was something that sounded like a lot of fun, but I wasn’t sure if I would find it fun. Dungeons and Dragons was outside of my comfort zone, so I tried to avoid it for as long as possible. I finally decided to ignore my thoughts and did everything I could to organize a new campaign with a few colleagues of mine and we recently started playing. Was I nervous I was going to be let down? Slightly. Was I? Far from it.
The first session went great and now we’re scheduled to play once a week. Something that I seemingly had no time for in the past is now a weekly routine for me after just one session of play (which lasted about 4 hours).
Try it. Whatever it is you are curious about trying, just try. The worst that can happen is you don’t enjoy it and your life goes back to normal. Best case scenario, you get to try a new experience and you end up enjoying yourself. Why should we hold ourselves back from the opportunities we seem to desire.
Whether it be a new style of pizza, working out, playing a new game, or anything in between – try it. Why miss out on what could end up being a great experience.
