“How do you think of something to write everyday?” I don’t get asked many questions about the blog, but when I do, this is usually the first question people ask. So, how do I come up with a different idea every day?
The answer is simple, really. I usually just write about the first thing that comes to mind. On the nights I can’t — I just look around my room and break down or alter how things work and translate them into something I can write about. My post Highlights is a great example of this technique. I looked at a highlighter, thought about what it does and then tried linking it to everyday life.
This technique can also be used with creative writing. I wrote a short story a few years ago titled The Voicemail, the inspiration came from looking at my phone and noticing I had an unchecked voicemail. Horror being my genre of choice, I twisted the idea into something horrific.
The trick with coming up with creative ideas is simply breaking down something to it’s fundamentals and applying something new to it. It is just as import to allow the ideas to flourish no matter how silly you might think they are. The moment you begin to reject ideas is the moment you’ll experience writers block.
To think creatively is to inspire the ordinary.
