A few years ago I wrote a letter to myself — a collection of unfiltered thoughts written in my google docs. No one has ever read this document except for me, and I’ve only read it once since I’ve written it. I will never delete it because it serves as a reminder to myself of how far I’ve come. To be completely honest, I felt a massive weight lifting off my mind as I wrote it.
After this experience, I cannot recommend it enough. If you are have a lot on your mind and are struggling to sort through it all, write yourself a private letter. Here’s how;
Turn off your brain and just write. Keep writing until you have nothing left to write about. Pour out your thoughts and feelings. Don’t worry about how it sounds, or about any kind of thought organization; just write. Just let your thoughts flow.
Allowing your thoughts to pour out in an unfiltered way will surface many of your subconscious thoughts and fears. Seeing them written out as you write/type away will spawn reactive thoughts and the whole letter becomes a conversation with your inner self. Don’t argue or stop any of it, just keep writing.
Once you’ve written it, don’t delete it, don’t even read over it. Once you can’t write anymore, put it away and leave it alone. After a day or two, feel free to go through it again if you’d like to, but you might find yourself surprised at how clear your head feels.
Grab some paper, or open up a text document and just start writing. You don’t even need to start with Dear Me. You just need to start.
